Gils Gas
( The car: a 1935 Ford 3-Window Coupe with a chopped top)
Period architecture and vintage cars is a kind of theme that links these paintings together. Many of the early roadside businesses were a bit awkward in there design. On the other hand that less formal cozy quality might have been due to the fact that many of these places were the first of their kind. Designed and built before it became science. I recall a gas station in
Texas that faced a corner of two intersecting streets. There was barely enough room to park and gas up. A few years back I found a similar one in Monrovia, California being used as a garage. (oil on canvas 1995)
