Rod Cult, issue #2
( From The Pulp Art Series)

The Idea of creating your own magazine is for me an old one, rooted in my childhood.

Back then I fantasized that perhaps one day I might be a famous artist, doing covers for books and magazines and eventually on to publishing my own magazines. As I grew, so did the scope of my dream.  I wanted to become a master fine artist as well.

This is where the focus of my attention has been for the past forty years or so. To some degree my dream became a reality. Over the past twenty-five years, I have painted what seems like an endless stream of book and magazine covers.

Fictional magazine covers for nonexistent magazines as fine art does make for a kind of surreal pop comic pulp art, however, I just think they are fun to paint, the same way I did back in high school. A fictional magazine provides an excellent vehicle for exploring modern obsessions, insanities, trends, fads and the popular notions of culture.
